What is a 'socket'?
The socket is the part of the prosthesis that fits directly onto the amputee's remaining limb. The socket is manufactured directly on top of the model of the limb that was created from the cast.
The socket is the most important part of the prosthesis, if it does not fit properly, problems including discomfort, pain and skin irritation.
The prosthetist will often make a test socket before proceeding with the final one in order to optimize size, shape and comfort.
